Resource Twins for Embedded Software Exploration

October 14, 2026

How can you explore an embedded application’s resource demands without sharing its functional source code?

This was a focus of our contribution to TwinSpace, the research project that concluded at the end of September.

At emmtrix Technologies, we contributed an end-to-end toolchain for creating resource twins from existing C software. Our extractor converts C code into load profiles expressed in the Load Profile Description Language (LPDL): a textual description of the application’s resource demands. The twin generator then turns these profiles into compilable C code.

The load profiles describe computational operations, memory accesses and control flow, rather than the original application’s functional logic or confidential implementation details.

We see this as a foundation for assessing non-functional software properties earlier in development: when selecting target hardware, designing software and optimising embedded systems. The abstraction can also support resource and platform exploration without exposing the original source code’s functional content.

Thank you to all project partners for the constructive collaboration on common interfaces, tool integration and practical use cases.

We look forward to developing these approaches further in our products and through future collaboration with partners and users.

Resource twins enable embedded software exploration without exposing functional source code.
